Among many other issues faced by the trucking industry, one of the most critical is the truck parking shortage. It is not just another critical issue but a dangerous one. A survey named “Annual Top Industry Issues Report” conducted by the American Transportation Research Institute in 2021, collected over 2,500 responses from different industry stakeholders. In the survey, the drivers highlighted pay and truck parking to be the top most critical issues they face.

The survey results were announced on the weekend during the 2021 American Trucking Associations Management Conference & Exhibition in Nashville.

The overall survey ranked the top issues as:

  • Driver shortage
  • Driver retention
  • Driver compensation
  • Lawsuit abuse reform
  • Truck parking
  • CSA
  • Detention time
  • Infrastructure funding
  • Insurance cost and availability
  • Shortage of diesel technicians.

For the first time, two issues tied for the top spot on the list compiled from drivers’ votes. The truck drivers voted for the truck parking shortage and the pay among the top most critical issues for the truck drivers.

The top issues chosen by drivers were:

  • Driver compensation and truck parking
  • Detention/Delay at customers facilities
  • Fuel prices
  • Driver training standards
  • Hours of service rules
  • ELD mandate
  • Driver distraction
  • Transportation infrastructure/congestion/funding
  • Speed limiters
  • CSA

Semiyard believes that the truck parking shortage also significantly strengthens the driver shortage (the top most concern of the companies) because parking issues, violations, and shortages increase the stress of the drivers.

On the other hand, the second topmost issue from drivers’ point of view is the pay. With low pay (perceivably or actually) and concerns like the truck parking shortage, drivers may not find any value in the trucking career.
